One of the most enduring phrases from the First World War, the Centenary of which we celebrate this year, was spoken by the then Foreign Secretary, Sir Edward Grey, in August 1914 on the eve of Britain’s official entry into the War.
“The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime”.
In commemoration of the event of which he spoke, the British Legion is inviting people across Great Britain to turn off their lights from 10pm until 11pm on August 4th, leaving on a single light or candle for a shared moment of reflection. Across the country government buildings, the Houses of Parliament, St Paul’s Cathedral and other notable monuments will be taking part.
Westminster Abbey will be leading the nation in a First World War vigil liturgy, which will be broadcast live on the BBC.
Special candles are being sold in Marks & Spencer, with profits going to the British Legion to support our soldiers.
