Andrew Mitchell MP has presented a local World War Two Veteran with the Arctic Star medal in recognition of the bravery of Royal Navy and Merchant Sailors, Airmen and Soldiers who served on the Arctic Convoys or North of the Arctic Circle some seventy years ago.
Sutton Coldfield’s MP has campaigned on behalf of his constituent, Mr Arthur Howes and was very pleased when Mr Howes invited him to present the medals to both him and his friend, Mr Edward Billingham at his home in Sutton Coldfield.
Andrew Mitchell MP, said “Although it has taken many years I am delighted that the Ministry of Defence has, at long last, recognised the bravery and the debt that our country owes to British veterans of the Arctic Convoys.
“It was an honour and a privilege to present Mr Howes and Mr Billingham with their Arctic Star Medals commending their courage and endurance under what were horrendous conditions.”
