This week the House of Commons returns following the end of the Summer Recess. This will be a busy session as the Government seeks to introduce further measures designed to stimulate economic growth.
I am only too conscious of the concern among my constituents about the state of both the British and global economies. I want, therefore, to reassure you that although the route to recovery is not easy, the Government’s plan to rescue our economy is working. I think that this is borne out by the fact that in the two years since coming to office we have cleared a quarter of the deficit left by Labour and created 900,000 jobs in the private sector.
We know we have to do more and that we have to do it faster. So over the next couple of weeks we will introduce legislation to speed up planning decisions, accelerate the process to build roads and to guarantee infrastructure projects.

As I am writing this column the whole country is getting behind the Paralympic GB team. This is the biggest and best Paralympics ever with more money being invested by the Government and lottery into elite Paralympic sport than ever before. I am particularly pleased to see the success achieved by athletes with strong links to Sutton Coldfield.
Jon-Allan Butterworth from Sutton has won two individual Silver Medals and Darren Harris from Wylde Green is competing as part of the Men’s Football 5-a-side team. Many of you will also recall Ellie Simmonds, from her time with Boldmere Swimming Club, who has once again given an outstanding performance building on her success in Beijing.
Being a Paralympian takes an extra measure of guts and steel and their courage and determination is not only to be admired but is an example to all of us. The Paralympics began in the UK and I think we have once again led the way in showing the world just how much Paralympians have to offer. I am sure you will join me in congratulating not only Team GB but all of those who have taken part in the 2012 Games.

Congratulations to all those students in Sutton Coldfield who achieved success in their examination results. Throughout the year I like to try to visit all of Sutton’s secondary schools and take the opportunity of talking to students who will be sitting important exams. Having met many of the young people I am not surprised that they have achieved such fantastic results and in many cases exceeded expectations.
Here in Sutton these excellent results are a tribute to the high calibre of local schools, the commitment of local Headteachers, teachers and support staff and of course the determination of our hardworking students.

Readers may have heard that I have been appointed as the new Government Chief Whip. I am very much looking forward to the challenge but I can assure you that my first priority will always be Sutton Coldfield and my constituents.
