Little Sutton Primary pupils were in for a treat last Friday afternoon when their local MP, Andrew Mitchell, presented the school with free gardening equipment thanks to the Morrisons ‘Let’s Grow’ programme and helped the children plant a plum tree in their grounds.
Andrew was met by Headteacher Mrs Rachel Davis, school pupils and Morrisons’ Head of Corporate Social Responsibility, Steven Butts.
At Little Sutton Primary School, each class has their own patch of garden where they grow a variety of vegetables. The pupils then sell these to their cook and eat for lunch in the canteen! Morrisons’ gardening equipment helps the children to continue with their green-fingered activities.
Little Sutton Primary is just one of more than 22,500 primary and secondary schools across the UK that have collected millions of ‘Let’s Grow’ vouchers to redeem pieces of gardening equipment ranging from watering cans and wormeries to wellies and weather stations.
In total, over the last two years of ‘Let’s Grow’, UK schools have taken delivery of: 5000 greenhouses, 7000 pairs of Wellington boots, 42,000 pairs of gardening gloves and 40,000 hand trowels.
Andrew Mitchell MP said, “It was great to see the children’s obvious enthusiasm for getting out into the garden and growing their own vegetables. Morrisons’ scheme is a good example of a large corporation giving something back to the local community and it was a pleasure to be able to present the school and pupils with their well earned and much valued gardening equipment.”
Vinney Ashurst, Morrisons’ Schools Partnership Manager said, “The enthusiasm for our ‘Let’s Grow’ campaign has been tremendous and we’ve had some wonderful feedback from parents, teachers and children. While it’s fantastic that the kids are looking forward to digging into the mud, there’s an important message here about getting young people interested in healthy fresh food and how it’s produced.”
