Sutton’s MP welcomed participants in this year’s Debating Competition to the Houses of Parliament on one of the last days of the Parliamentary session for a tour and a chance to see what their MP does to represent the Royal Town of Sutton Coldfield in Westminster.
The students from across Royal Sutton Coldfield’s secondary schools visited Westminster for a tour of the Houses of Parliament and were joined over lunch by Andrew Mitchell for a Q&A session.
The students heard from their MP about the Parliamentary process, the different routes into politics for young people and the issues that Andrew Mitchell feels are important to Sutton Coldfield. There were also a number of questions about current issues, local, national and international, including the Government’s education policy, Britain’s membership of the EU, ways of promoting cycling in Sutton Coldfield.
To round off their visit the students watched from the Public Gallery while MPs debated matters relating to Transport, and then listened to the Foreign Secretary’s statement on Gaza.
Andrew Mitchell MP said “I always enjoy welcoming the Royal Sutton Coldfield Debaters to Parliament and answering their questions relating to my work here in Westminster. Many thanks to Birmingham Metropolitan College who once again sponsored this visit, and to Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls who hosted this year’s competition”.
