Andrew Mitchell MP and local Councillor James Bird attended New Hall Mill’s
Heritage Open Day last Sunday with President David Owen and Chairman Honorary Alderman Jim Whorwood to thank the ‘Friends of New Hall Mill’ who support the maintenance of the Grade 2 listed building and its meadow field.
Mr Mitchell was shown around the Mill which is one of only two water mills still surviving in the Birmingham area and is funded entirely by donations. The group watched the wheat being milled into flour in the traditional way by using water power and mill stones, before taking a look at the classic cars on display and visiting the stall of a Medieval Surgeon.
Following his tour, Andrew Mitchell MP said “Every time I visit the Mill I learn something new on this wonderful place. New Hall Mill is often described locally as ‘Sutton’s little gem’ and it really is just that!”
“The Mill would not be open to visitors if the Friends of New Hall Mill did not donate their time and local knowledge to help with the maintenance of the Mill and on Open Days such as this so huge thanks must go to them.”
New Hall Councillor, James Bird commented “The hard work of the volunteers has provided New Hall and Sutton Coldfield with a great historical asset restored to its former glory. The Mill is quite simply wonderful".
